“The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgement with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and behold, a greater than Jonas is here.” Luke 11:42
The message of repentance did not come easy, even for Jonah, who knew that he had the power of God with him. “And he said unto them, I am an Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, which hath made the sea and the dry land.” Jonah 1 v9. The storm came upon the ship that he had boarded to try and escape God’s calling to him. In order to calm the storm he was cast into the sea, where the Lord had prepared “a great fish to swallow up Jonah” Jonah refered to this experience as “out of the belly of hell”.
Jonah’s repentance came in this manner. “When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that I have vowed, Salvation is of the Lord.”
The message goes on to tell us that “God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way;” and for that time he spared them.
The message of repentance and observance of God’s way in our lives is not of any man, but of God. Grace is an awesome gift from God in the form of forgiveness, it is also the spiritual witness in us that we can, with the guidance and strength of the spirit of the Lord work to live as pleasing to the Lord.
Chastisement comes to those the Lord loves in the essence of true love and compassion for the individual. That love will manifest itself through the individual by the Lords strength to helping others by the word of their testimony. Guard your testimony by the way you live before the Lord and before others. In Jonahs words again, “I fear the Lord, the God of heaven,…”
